What Lies Beneath
“This portrayal of physical masculinity oozes sensuality, from the blue jeans - which of course were pinned into the collective consciousness of society as a defining symbol of male sex appeal following Levi’s 501 laundrette commercial in 1985 - through to the simple tank top with a ribbed fabric quality which allows it to morph to the shape of the body upon which it is situated. The space between the jeans and the tank top, lifted part way up by the model’s hands, gives us a clear impression of what lies beneath, but leaves us wanting more. The thick application of paint for the clothing contrasts with the less dense painting of the skin, drawing our eyes towards the skin and allowing us to easily trace both the fluid contours and rigid geometric shapes of the strongly defined male form.”
